Access to BankingGood Ideas on Economic Inclusion: Access to Banking

What is financial inclusion and why is it an important issue for immigrants? In our new report, Omar Khan, Runnymede Trust, U.K., offers expert commentary and context for a selection of good practices that illustrate some of the multiple and overlapping strategies being developed by innovative city leaders, civil servants, business and community organizations in cities across Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

Good Ideas on Economic Inclusion: Access to Banking is the first report in a series that examines issues and good practices related to the economic integration and inclusion of immigrants in the neighbourhoods, highstreets and workplaces of today’s cities.

Municipal Report CoverGood Ideas from Successful Cities: Municipal Leadership in Immigrant Integration. September, 2012. It is in the capacity of every city in the world to provide a better welcome and contribute to immigrant success by creating the conditions for investment, attachment and belonging. Cities are uniquely positioned to learn from one another and to adapt and replicate good practice. Whatever the legal and jurisdictional framework, or differences in municipal responsibilities, cities around the world are accountable to their constituents and have a wide range of levers to introduce change – through policy instruments (equality, inclusion, nondiscrimination), as service providers (settlement, education, housing, police, etc.), as employers and diversity managers, and as the drivers of the local economy – from infrastructure and procurement to support for investment, entrepreneurship and small business incubation. In Good Ideas from Successful Cities: Municipal Leadership in Immigrant Integration, we share nearly 40 international good practices from cities across Canada, the US, Europe and Australasia. (Maytree, 2012)

In Lessons from Successful Cities: Municipal Leadership in Immigrant Integration, international experts provide policy insights for city leaders and their community partners. (Maytree, 2013)

A series of short country reports provides a further selection of municipal good practice in comparative perspective (Maytree, 2012-2013).
